Lana Del Rey, video artist extraordinaire

The most fascinating new performer to arrive on the music scene, Lana Del Rey has already left her mark as a unique and talented artist with a rare self-awareness of musical history and pop culture nostalgia.

Lana Del Rey made her 2008 debut in the world of independent music under the name “Lizzy Grant” before signing a deal with Stranger Records to release the single “Video Games”.
She then went to sign a joint deal with Polydor and Interscope records in October of 2011.
The singer songwriter whose statuesque form and retro sense of style and makeup, evokes such 1960s pop culture icons as Jackie Kennedy, Sharon Tate, and most of all Nancy SinatraLana Del Rey, with her seductive pout and trance-like vocals is always in character because this is who she is, or at least appears to be. She could be a guest performer on“Mad Men”, simply play herself, and be at perfect ease in the world of  Madison Avenue circa 1965.
2012 began with a double shot of Lana Del Rey that catapulted her into the mainstream of pop culture with the release of her album “Born to Die” and her supposedly controversial performance on SNL on January 24th. Apparently Del Rey’s unique artistry and hypnotic delivery was not appreciated by the show’s network. Perhaps the SNL team has lost a bit its edge and no longer recognizes a unique talent, even when they book it. The following week the singer was spoofed in a humorous parody by Kristen Wiig.
Most great albums get mixed reviews when they first debut, and “Born to Die” was no exception. And great it is. Lana Del Ray’s album “Born to Die” a groundbreaking masterpiece of baroque popmixed with melancholy retro lounge that contains eclectic shades of such diverse artistic influences as The Mamas and the Papas, Enya, the aforementioned Nancy Sinatra, and even modern pop artists such as Dido and Brittany Spears.

Where Lana Del Rey really stands out is in the role of a storyteller. The mood and lyrics of her songs convey the angst and nostalgia of the a lost past. But it is in the format of the music videowhere the brooding singer gets to show her artistic chops.
The music videos of Del Rey are not your typical glossy performance promotion pieces that most pop artists are cranking out today. Her music videos are not really music videos at all. They are experimental short films that harken back to the days of director Mary Lambert’s early Madonna videos in the 80s, Steve Barron’s “Take Me On” A-ha video, or Garbage’s “Push It” video in 1998.

“Video Games” is a technical masterwork directed by the singer herself. It mixes video formats and archival filmstocks to create mood and texture. Film buffs and cinematographers who have worked with Super 8 and 16mm film can appreciate the sense of cinematic awareness Del Rey has infused into this technical wonder.
“Blue Jeans” is pure singer songwriter backyard romantic Americana at its most sullen and melodramatic (in a good way). Every frame is carefully composed with a careful eye on spacial relations. It’s the open canvas of the wide angle lens versus the emotionally (and economically) trapped characters reminiscent of Southern Pulp fiction from the 1950's and 60's.
Perhaps it is “National Anthem” that stands as Lana Del Rey’s video masterpiece to date. Directed by Anthony Mandler, the video is a riveting and provocative re-imagining of the early 1960s Kennedy Era Camelot period. “National Anthem” is shot and edited with the stylistic flair of Oliver Stone’s “JFK” (1991) film. Lana Del Rey is cast as both Jackie Kennedy and Marylin Monroe in the video and A$AP Rocky as John F. Kennedy.
The hypnotic stare, the Rat Pack meets Mad Men sense of style, and the cinematic sense of melodrama, Lana Del Rey is a fascinating new voice in the world of pop culture.

A reader's guide to Sword of the Bull Mongoni

“Sword of The Bull Mongoni” is a riveting action adventure story about a hirsute, barbarian bastard, Tarmok, an extraordinary man from the past. Except, he is not really a man, or to put it in more precise biological terms, Tarmok is not of the Homo sapien species, and perhaps not even of the Homo genus.

Tarmok is the last of the Bull Mongoni. The Bull Mongoni were a fierce and noble species of hominids that once roamed the mountains of Eurasia and the forests of Africa. It is theorized they evolved along a parallel time line to the Homo genus, but did not branch off from the Australopithecus as the precursors to the Homo sapiens did.

Instead, the Bull Mongoni either split off from Pan after the Homo/Pan split of 4.6 million years ago, or maybe even evolved from a hominid split from the Gorillini genus. Although most current scholars, including the original author of the Bull Mongini theory Joe Fenton, now are leaning toward a later Pan split on an alternate time line.

At some point, most likely between 200,000 and 50,000 years ago, portions of the Bull Mongoni began to migrate out of Africa to Eurasia. This heavily muscled, athletic species of hominids thrived throughout the New World, outlasting both Homo Erectus and the Neanderthals. The Bull Mongoni also began to spread into equatorial zones during the last ice age and repopulated the forests of Africa. They even developed a culture complete with illustration ,writing, and complex story telling skills sometime around 10,000 years ago.

What happened after that is the subject of a long lost book of scriptures known as “The Sacred Scrolls of Tarmok”. After learning about the philosophy of the Bull Mongoni from his mentor, Gunner Star, Joe Fenton dedicated his life to tracking down the scrolls and learning the history of the Bull Mongoni. He published his findings in “Bull Mongoni: The Lost Tribe of Hominids”, a self-published book that became an underground cult sensation and helped the fearsome anti-hero vigilante Gunner Star to spread the Word of Tarmok.

Armed with Joe Fenton’s book as his guide and The Sacred Scrolls of Tarmok as his canon, Gunner Star takes on new proteges Tyrone and Caitlin in “Rise of the Bull Mongoni”. The three of them begin to recruit an army of like minded iron warriors and teach them the ways of the Bull Mongoni and they begin to fight back against the growing  forces of intolerance, deception, hate, cruelty, and injustice.

The Bull Mongoni movement begins to gain momentum after taking on and defeating an evil and all powerful right wing propaganda bully media icon. The Word of Tarmok spreads and the gospel of the Bull Mongoni begins to explode. But still, there are far too many hate-filled fiends in the Homo sapien world for Gunner Star and his disciples to battle. There is something missing from the Bull Mongoni movement, something beyond theories and legends. Something tangible. Something real. Something physical. Until finally...that something arrives in...

"Sword of the Bull Mongoni".

Tarmok, the last of the Bull Mongoni has returned to take back the planet, protect the earth, and battle anyone who dares to stand in his way.

Written in the screenplay format, The Sword of Tarmok is an action packed, riveting sequel to the avante-guarde cult sensation, Rise of the Bull Mongoni.

Mia Kirshner, elusive beauty

Mia Kirsher has such a captivating presence she makes every supporting role she has played unforgettable. That is because the actress herself is someone who leaves quite an impression. The fact that most of her acting jobs have been in supporting roles, guest spots, or leads in little seen independent films have only added to her mystique.
The Canadian born actress is the granddaughter of Holocaust survivors and a fierce advocate of humanitarian causes. She even wrote and published a book, “I Live Here” (2008), an epic real life narrative that chronicles the story of four different groups of women and children refugees.
Mia first came to the attention of movie fans at the age of 19 with her luminous and haunting performance in Atom Egoyan’s brilliant film about tragedy and healing, “Exotica” (1994). Mia plays the role of an exotic dancer named Christina who shares a special connection to a grieving man with a tragic past played by Bruce Greenwood.
"Exotica" was a big hit during the1994 festival circuit and was nominated for a Palme d’or at The Cannes Film Festival. Roger Ebert even included the movie in his “Great Movies” essay. “Exotica” truly is an artistic triumph on every level, but what makes it all come together is the presence of Mia Kirshner. Her ethereal performance, beguiling beauty, and radiating sexual charisma must be seen to be believed.

Mia followed up “Exotica” with “The Crow: City of Angels” (1996), a misguided, ill-advised, unnecessary, and dreadful sequel to the late, great Brandon Lee’s cult classic “The Crow” (1994). However awful the film might be, Mia still manages to bring every scene she is in to life with her searing presence and single-handedly makes the movie worth watching.
Over the years there has never been the starring role that the actress deserved as a follow up to “Exotica”. But what makes Mia Kirshner so unique is her ability to elevate even the smallest of supporting roles and make them instantly memorable.
Mia showed her badass side as the cold and deadly assassin Mandy in “24" (2001-2005). She helped make “The L Word” a huge hit for Showtime with her performace as Jenny Shecter (2004-2009). More recently, she was part of the sexy cult sensation “The Vampire Diaries” as Isobel Fleming (2010-2011).

Mia’s role as the tragic title character in the underrated Brian De Palma film noir “The Black Dahlia” (2006) is haunting and unforgettable. The actress has a way of cutting to the dark, emotional core and bringing out the angst in troubled characters.
In the age of hyperactive, multi-media saturation and ridiculous overexposure, Mia Kirshner is the rarest of all celebrities. Someone who has managed to maintain an air of mystery about her and possess an element of intrigue that leaves fans wanting more. In the era of nonstop celebrity chatter, she is the ultimate elusive beauty.
